Private browsing, incognito mode, whatever your browser calls it, feels like a privacy feature. It’s one of the most misunderstood tools on the internet. It does something real, but it’s far less than most people assume, and the gap is where people get caught out.
What it actually does
Incognito mode keeps your browsing off the local device. When you close the window, the history, cookies, and form data from that session are wiped from the browser you’re using. That’s useful for the obvious case: using a shared or family computer without leaving your activity behind for the next person. That’s the whole job. It’s a tidy-up tool for the device in front of you.
What it doesn’t do
Here’s where the misunderstanding bites. Incognito mode does not hide your activity from the websites you visit, which can still identify and track you in plenty of ways. It does not hide your activity from your internet provider, your employer, or your school, all of whom can still see where you go. It does not change your IP address or make you anonymous. And it does nothing once you log into an account, because the moment you sign in, you’ve told that site exactly who you are. Private browsing protects you from the person who uses your computer next. It does not protect you from anyone on the other end of the connection.
If that’s the protection you need, use it for what it’s good at. Just don’t mistake a clean local history for actually being private.
