It’s one of the most common questions in privacy, and the marketing has muddied it badly: does a VPN make you anonymous? The honest answer is no. A VPN is a useful tool, but anonymity isn’t what it’s for, and treating it like a cloak of invisibility will get you into trouble.
What a VPN actually does
A VPN encrypts the traffic between your device and the VPN server, then sends it out to the internet from there. That does two real things. It hides your browsing from whoever runs the network you’re on, like a coffee shop, an airport, or your internet provider. And it swaps your visible IP address for the VPN’s, so the sites you visit see the VPN instead of your home connection. Both are worth having. Neither is anonymity.
Why it isn’t anonymity
The catch is simple: you’ve moved your trust, not removed it. Your internet provider can’t see your traffic anymore, but the VPN can. If the VPN logs what you do, or gets compelled to start, the picture is right there. On top of that, most of what identifies you online has nothing to do with your IP address. You’re tracked through the accounts you log into, cookies, browser fingerprinting, and your own habits. A VPN does nothing about any of that. Log into your real email behind a VPN and you’re not anonymous, you just look anonymous to the coffee shop.
How to think about it
Use a VPN for what it’s good at: protecting your traffic on untrusted networks and keeping your provider out of your business. Pick one that doesn’t keep logs and doesn’t need your identity to sign up. SovereignOS ships with Mullvad for exactly this reason. Just don’t mistake a better lock on one door for an empty house. Real privacy comes from a stack of good choices, not a single app.
