Your GPS is lying to you more often than it used to, and the trend is not subtle. According to the airline industry’s own 2025 safety reporting, GPS jamming rose 67 percent between 2023 and 2025, and spoofing, the sneakier cousin, nearly tripled, up 193 percent. In the Baltic, interference is now a daily fact of life. One country’s aviation authority reported hundreds of separate GNSS interference events every week, roughly twenty times the rate just a year earlier. Europe’s aviation safety regulator is now on the fourth revision of its safety bulletin about the problem, and it keeps using words like “more severe” and “more sophisticated.”
This is not abstract. Finnair suspended flights to one Estonian city after interference stopped aircraft from completing approaches. Ships have been steered off course. Pilots report their cockpit showing them over the sea while they are plainly over land. And in the worst documented case, an Azerbaijan Airlines flight in December 2024 reportedly suffered GPS jamming before being struck and going down, killing dozens, though the official investigation is still unfinished. The regions where this is concentrated, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Baltic, the Black Sea, are exactly the places where electronic warfare is now a permanent background condition.

Jamming you notice. Spoofing you do not.
There are two flavors of this, and the difference matters enormously.
Jamming is the blunt one. It floods the GPS frequencies with noise until your receiver simply cannot hear the satellites. Your position goes blank or throws an error. It is disruptive, but at least it is honest. You know immediately that you have lost GPS, and you can fall back on other methods.
Spoofing is the one that should keep you up at night. Instead of blocking the signal, it replaces it with a convincing fake, feeding your device coordinates that are wrong on purpose. Your phone, your aircraft, your drone does not lose its position. It confidently displays the wrong one. Nothing looks broken. There is no error, no blank screen, no alarm. You are simply somewhere you are not, and you have no reason to doubt it. On a shared map, that is worse than having no position at all, because a confident wrong dot gets trusted, acted on, and passed to your whole team as truth.
And here is the part people miss: it is not always the enemy
The instinct is to assume all this interference is hostile, an adversary denying you your navigation. A lot of it is. But a surprising and growing share of it is defensive, and understanding that changes how you think about the whole problem.
Modern drones navigate by satellite. So one of the most effective ways to stop a drone from reaching its target is to jam or spoof the GPS in the airspace you want to protect. That is not a theory. A researcher at the German Aerospace Center, studying the Baltic interference, put it plainly: it is “electronic warfare with the aim of preventing being hit by things that use satellite navigation,” meaning drones. Counter-drone systems around sensitive sites deliberately jam GNSS to knock unauthorized aircraft out of the sky, or spoof it to feed an incoming drone false coordinates so it flies itself somewhere harmless.
Which means the jamming bubble you are standing in might be an enemy denying you your GPS, or it might be the home team, a friendly force or a protected site, defending itself against drones and blanketing the area in the process. The interference does not care whose side you are on. If you are inside that bubble, your GPS is compromised the same way regardless of who switched it on and why. You can be degraded by your own side’s protection just as thoroughly as by an opponent’s attack.
That reframes the operator’s actual need. It was never “detect the enemy’s jamming.” It is “know, right now, whether the satellite position I am looking at can be trusted, and know where the boundary of the affected area is,” whoever is responsible for it.
Turning your phone into a jamming detector
