There is a debate that people outside this world assume is still open, and it is not. What device should carry your situational-awareness picture in the field? A purpose-built tactical computer? A ruggedized handheld? Some bespoke piece of defense hardware?
The answer, settled years ago by the people with the biggest budget on earth, is: a phone.
The standard end-user device across the United States military is a commercial smartphone. Samsung’s Galaxy Tactical Edition line, the S23 Tactical Edition, the XCover, the Tab Active tablets, is the product of a Department of Defense collaboration going back more than a decade, and it is deployed across all branches. The Army has been putting Android phones in soldiers’ hands for dismounted situational awareness since the Nett Warrior program started fielding them, more than ten years ago, beginning with an off-the-shelf Motorola. Android is specifically encouraged for these devices, and one of the stated reasons is almost funny in its bluntness: familiarity. Soldiers already know how to use a phone.
Read that again. The most capability-obsessed, requirement-heavy customer in the world looked at the options, and chose the same slab of glass you are holding right now. Not because it was cheap, though it is, but because a modern phone is genuinely the right tool. It has the GPS, the camera, the motion sensors, the multiple radios, the compute, and the screen, all in one pocket-sized package that gets security updates and has been tested by billions of users. Nothing purpose-built comes close to that combination, and nothing ever will, because no defense contractor can out-iterate the global smartphone industry.
So the hardware question is answered. The phone won. The only real question left is which phone, and on what terms.
The catch with the “official” tactical phone
Here is where it gets frustrating for anyone who is not a government buyer.
The tactical versions of these phones are excellent and largely out of reach. They are gated. The Tactical Edition devices are sold under government and contractor terms, wrapped in end-user license agreements, tied to specific enabling software owned by big integrators, and pointed at certification lists meant for classified use. They are also expensive, and they lock you into a particular vendor’s ecosystem to get the tactical features working at all.
If you are a branch of the military, that is fine. You have the procurement pipeline and the budget and the mission that justifies it. But look one rung down. A small security detail. A volunteer search-and-rescue team. A rural fire department. A two-person protective detail. A solo operator. None of them can just walk up and buy a Tactical Edition device and its ecosystem, and even if they could, the cost and the lock-in would be absurd for what they actually need.
So the same gap we keep running into shows up again in a new place. The capability exists, the industry has proven the phone is the device, and the accessible version still is not there for the small team. The good stuff is behind a procurement wall.
You do not need the gated version
Here is the thing the gatekeeping obscures: the capability was never in the special hardware. It was in the phone, plus the software. And the phone part, you already have.
Everything we build runs on a normal phone. Not a special device, not a certified handheld, not a five-figure kit. The phone in your pocket, optionally hardened by us into something genuinely locked down, is the platform. Our tools give it the tactical capability, a shared picture, a sensor feed, a jamming detector, a training injector, the phone-hosted server, without asking you to buy a whole separate device or sign onto someone’s classified ecosystem. Same fundamental approach the military validated. None of the procurement.
That has knock-on benefits that matter more than the price tag:
Zero learning curve on the hardware. It is a phone. Your least technical teammate already knows how to hold it, charge it, and tap the screen. The military listed soldier familiarity as a reason to standardize on Android. That reason applies double to a small team with no time for device training.
No procurement cycle. There is nothing to source, no lead time, no contract. If your team has phones, your team has the hardware. You can be running today.
It is the device you already live on. The tactical-phone vendors advertise that their device works for “mission planning, training, operations and daily use,” one device for everything. A normal phone already is that device. You do not carry a second thing. You do not switch contexts. The capability rides along on the tool that is always with you anyway.
Discretion comes free. We have written about why a phone that looks like an obvious piece of security gear is a liability. A normal phone running our software looks like a normal phone. A blacked-out ruggedized tactical handheld does not. Sometimes the right device is the one nobody clocks.
And when the phone genuinely is not enough
We are not going to pretend a phone does everything. Sometimes you need a sensor a phone does not have, a radio it does not carry, or a connection to a piece of gear it was never meant to talk to. The dedicated-hardware crowd treats that as the argument for buying the whole expensive system.
We treat it as a reason to add twenty dollars of parts, not two thousand. When the phone needs to reach beyond itself, it becomes the brain and the network for a cheap peripheral. You extend the capability with a small add-on instead of replacing the whole platform. The phone stays the center of gravity, because it should be.
The honest limit
The one real thing the Tactical Edition devices buy you that a stock phone does not is ruggedization. They are drop-tested, dust-sealed, water-resistant, glove-friendly, built to survive being thrown in the dirt for years. That is genuine, and if your environment is brutal enough, it matters.
But be honest about the size of that gap for your actual team. A good rugged case and a reasonable phone gets the large majority of teams the large majority of the way there, at a tiny fraction of the cost. For a fire department, a security detail, a SAR team, or an operator who needs capability now, the trade almost always favors the phone you already own. Save the hardened-hardware budget for the specific people whose job truly requires it, and give everyone else the capability today on the device in their pocket.
